Winter spiritual teachings

winter spiritual teachings

In each season, Mother Nature provides us with deep teachings and insights, able to fuel our spiritual growth. Beyond Winter’s unpleasant sensations and deprivations, there are also hidden blessings of truth for the soul.

Here I summarize some lessons from the coldest, darkest days of the year:

  • Go inwards – winter times invite us to be inside. In dark-cold days, there is no place like home. In our inner refuge, we are safe and able to endure. It’s time to look after our inner fields and to be deep rooted in the soul.
  • Be still – there is no need to do anything. Actually, there is nothing to do at all. Dormant is the energy of the season. Just be still and enjoy your “stand-by” mode.
  • Just watch – no where to go, nothing to do, simply be a non-judgmental witness of yourself and your surroundings. Things/beings are what they are, are what they need to be. Ultimately, not good, not bad. Even the seemingly detrimental conditions of winter have a reason to be so. All is required for the Whole.
  • Be patient – slowly, the wheel will turn and soon, deprivation times will end. Life will erupt in all of its forms. Noting to do, nowhere to go, just watch and wait. Change will naturally lead the way.
  • Have faith – Know in your heart that better days are yet to come. Trust divine, cosmic order and timing. The glory of warmer and lightful days are the Whole’s promise and Nature’s way.

Most of all, winter show us that under detrimental, unfavorable conditions one can endure by relying on a passive, no-energy-expenditure state. There is no need to fight against the inevitable or to struggle with what we cannot change. This too shall pass, it’s just a phase.
